Why I Started Oceanseen: A Founder’s Story

You know that feeling when you're just pulled toward something, even if you can't quite explain why? There's a knowing deep inside—an instinct that guides you. That’s exactly how Oceanseen came to be. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to create something that gives back to the ocean, something designed and inspired by its beauty, its power, and its soul. The ocean truly feels woven into my being. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in White Rock, BC, always knowing it was there—a part of me, a constant source of healing and connection.

When I first envisioned starting a business, it had to be connected to the ocean—completely, wholeheartedly. One day, during a quiet walk, the name Oceanseen just came to me. Honestly, I wasn't sure about the name at first! But, the more I thought about it, the more it grew on me, and that same deep knowing returned, affirming it was the right path.

The Journey to Gift Boxes

So, I started brainstorming. My first idea was to venture into interior design—a field I absolutely love! I adore light wooden furniture that has that rustic nod to driftwood, paired with colors inspired by the sea. But that passion quickly led me down a different, somewhat disheartening path: the reality of furniture often being poorly made, mass-produced, wasteful, and cheap. It’s a frustrating reality in our current era, isn't it?

However, that exploration wasn't in vain. It led me to an uplifting discovery: while eco-friendly furniture options exist, they often come with a significant price tag. But then, my eyes were opened to a world of eco-friendly textiles and products made by people—by women, by Canadians—many of which are handcrafted with care and a commitment to sustainability. Seeing this vibrant community of ethical creators made me so happy. It didn't solve my furniture dilemma (I’m still saving for those gorgeous eco pieces!), but it illuminated all these incredible local brands striving to make a difference.

A New Vision Takes Shape

That deep inner knowing was back again, stronger than ever. I realized my true calling was to support these brands—these small, passionate businesses. I wanted to offer something meaningful, well-made, and good quality. That’s when the idea of curating eco-friendly, ocean-themed gift bundles crystallized. And to truly give back, a portion from each sale, every month, would go directly toward ocean conservation efforts right here in British Columbia.

That felt right—that felt good.

In this crazy, often over-consuming world, these eco-friendly, sustainable, handmade, and local businesses need our support more than ever. It's a reminder for all of us to buy better, give better, reduce waste, and show more care for our planet. Even just making one conscious choice a day can make a significant difference. It’s about taking small steps—each one adding up—to protect what we love.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me and Oceanseen. Every thoughtfully curated gift box we create is a step towards a greener future, supporting small Canadian businesses and giving back to the ocean that inspires us all.
